BSNL launches nationwide Wi-Fi Calling service at no extra cost
New Delhi: State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled out Wi-Fi Calling, also known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), for users across India. The service became available in all telecom circles from January 1, 2026, the company said.

The new feature allows BSNL subscribers to make and receive voice calls and send messages over any Wi-Fi network. It is designed to improve call quality and connectivity in indoor locations such as homes, offices, and basements, as well as in remote areas where mobile network coverage may be limited. BSNL has confirmed that the service is being offered at no additional cost.
The nationwide rollout is part of BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme, which focuses on strengthening connectivity in rural and underserved regions of the country.

Wi-Fi Calling is supported on most modern smartphones and can be activated by enabling the “Wi-Fi Calling” option in the device settings. The service is built on an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) platform, enabling seamless handover between Wi-Fi and cellular networks without call drops.
Calls are placed using the phone’s default dialler and the user’s existing mobile number, eliminating the need for third-party applications. According to BSNL, this ensures a familiar calling experience while improving reliability.
The telecom operator said the feature would be particularly beneficial for customers in rural and remote areas who have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection, including BSNL Bharat Fiber and other broadband services. The company also expects Wi-Fi Calling to help reduce congestion on mobile networks.
